During winter, the cooler weather can increase pain and stiffness in arthritic joints due to increased joint swelling and reduced levels of mobility.
Wear and tear of your joints may occur due to aging, injury, prolonged posture, over use of joints, or excess weight. For some people symptoms can be disabling and, when it involves larger joints of the body such as the hip or knee, the severity of the problem may require surgical treatment.

Here are 10 simple tips to assist your arthritis and help get you through the winter:

    1. Respect pain it is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong
    2. Avoid over-stressing  and overloading your joints
    3. Avoid jerky/sudden movements
    4. Take care with lifting
    5. Watch your weight, this will assist in reducing stress on the weight bearing joints
    6. Improve your body postures to take stress off your joints
    7. Maintain a regular exercise program to assist joint mobility and circulation
    8. Keep active around the house e.g. gardening
    9. Use walking aids as advised
    10. Consult your physiotherapist for advice on joint protection strategies, treatment and exercise programs for arthritis e.g. hydrotherapy

These tips can be useful in maintaining current levels of function and mobility as well as reducing pain. If you suffer from increased aches and pains through winter, talk to your Physiotherapist about how you can better manage you symptoms and get on top of the underlying problem.
