Just had a hip or knee replacement and not sure where to begin your rehab?
Sometimes it is difficult to perform exercises whilst weight bearing on your new hip/knee as the surrounding area is still healing. However, it is important to begin your rehab as soon as you can in order to achieve the best results. Have you considered exercise in water? Hydrotherapy can be a great place to start your rehab. Hydrotherapy can commence post surgery at the direction of your surgeon.
What is Hydrotherapy and how can it help?
Hydrotherapy is a type of rehabilitation that uses water to help the body move and exercise. The water helps take the weight off the body and its joints to allow the areas to move smoother and further through range safely. Not only does the water allow the joints to move further, it can also help improve balance and walking mobility by strengthening muscles and joints through exercises and functional movements. The pool is usually around 32 degrees and is of a shallow depth, making it comfortable and suitable for all ages.
What can I expect?
Upon commencement of hydro with us, you will be given a personalised exercise program to help you with your specific issues and goals. These exercises will range from movements as simple as walking to exercises using different types of equipment, which help strengthen certain muscles. This will help you achieve your specific goals in a shorter period of time.
During the sessions we have experienced hydrotherapy instructors that provide close supervision and advice on all sessions so you’ll never be left alone in the corner of the pool!
For your convenience, we have four sites that we use for hydrotherapy:
Calvary rehabilitation hospital (Walkerville);
Norwood Swim school (Beulah Park);
Blackwood fitness (Blackwood); and
Findon Swim school (Kidman Park).
When the time is right, we will discuss the next best step for your rehab, which may be progressing to our on-site gym at our Prospect clinic.
