Every year I promise myself that I’ll keep track of my papers and save myself some stress at tax time – I never do. Inevitably I end up spending a few long evenings before sheepishly arriving at my accountant with a box full of receipts, a stiff neck and pain between my shoulder blades. This happens because of a build-up of muscle tension and activation of trigger points.

Fortunately, there is a solution (even for those of us never likely to be organised pre-tax time!). Dry needling is similar to acupuncture and involves inserting a thin, sterile needle into the tight bands that form in your muscles during times of high stress such as now when you’re stuck at your kitchen table for nights on end organising your finances. It works but delivering a very localised stretch at the same time as triggering the muscle fibres to stop contracting – the result being less pain and more supple muscles.

The good news is that it doesn’t even hurt – at worst people feel a slight ache in the muscle as the needle goes in, but it eases very quickly and then you hardly feel a thing. And because we use sterile needles and have extra training, the whole process is very safe.

So, if you’re experiencing EOFY stress, think about helping yourself relax with some dry needling treatment. Several of our physiotherapists at The Physio Clinic have training in dry needling and will be happy to help and answer any questions or concerns you have.
