This page contains some information about what the NDIS is, and how The Physio Clinic can help you to access this funding for Physiotherapy. We have therapists with over 20 years of experience working with disability, and can help provide the support you or your loved one needs when living with a disability.
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme or NDIS is the biggest change to the healthcare system since the introduction of Medicare in 1984. It helps provide funding for people under the age of 65 with permanent and significant disability to access the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life. More information about the NDIS can be accessed here: www.ndis.gov.au/about-us/what-ndis
Who can access the NDIS?
The NDIS is accessible to people living with a significant or permanent disability, aged under 65. A significant or permanent disability is one that the person will likely have for the rest of their life and affects how they do everyday tasks or limits their ability to work, study or access the community.
The NDIS eligibility for disability considers whether the condition is likely to be lifelong, whether it interferes with the ability to participate fully in daily activities and to live a full life in society. In order to determine whether you are eligible, you need to complete the checklist (access NDIS Access Checklist here). If you answer YES to a series of questions, you need to contact the National Disability Insurance Agency on 1800 800 110 to request an Access Request form be sent to you.
More information is available from the NDIS website: Accessing the NDIS

People with disability aged over 65 are not eligible for NDIS funding, but can receive supports via from the government agency MyAgedCare: www.myagedcare.gov.au/
The NDIS process:
The NDIS has a particular terminology that is helpful to understand. When someone is eligible and approved for the scheme they are called a “participant”. In order to access support services, they need to arrange their first “plan”. This document will outline the support services they need to meet their needs and receive support. This will depend on what the “goals” are, and what they want the funding to help them achieve, or their “outcomes”. The NDIS will contact participants or their carers over the phone to start this process.
The pathway for participants may seem complex, but there are three main phases
1. Engaging with the NDIS: learning about it, applying for access and receiving confirmation that you are eligible.
2. Planning to achieve goals and outcomes, based on what you want the NDIS to help you with and determine what supports can be arranged.
3. Achieving goals and outcomes, with appropriate support and then review of this process every year.
